So in class the other day my teacher talked about how Jimmy Carter pulled the US out of the 1980 Olympics. And that really bothered me... Back in Ancient Greece, entire wars would stop for the Olympics, and now they can just be cancelled over a diplomatic spat? It's sad that the Olympics have totally lost their original purpose -- to honor Zeus.

What are your guys' thoughts on the subject?

Personally, I think I'll have some kind of special offering to Zeus during the opening ceremonies, just to respect the ancient tradition.

Hi! Very Interesting Group! I have a Question: What is your view on Asebia?

By asebia do you mean when it was illegal in ancient greece to worship or introduce any other gods than the once in the existing pantheon?

Yes, sorry i should have made it clear what i mean. Yes, the Dioheithes Law. (In Ancient Greece Asebia was:Desecration of the temples, mocking of the rituals, denying the existence of the gods, certain Scientific views...)

What do you consider as disrespectful towards the gods? Is there still something like Asebia in modern hellenic Polytheism? For example do you believe in Evolution?

And thank you very much for answering my questions.

thank you for clarifying. personally, since Asebia happened so long ago, and i do not come from a line of hellenistics, i dont really think much of that point in time.

the only things i really see as disrespectful of the gods are when people say things like 'people actually believed in this shit?!' or 'you know your gods are fake, right?'.

i do see a modern form of Asebia in Greece as hellenists cannot worship inside the temples (they tried successfully once, there were so many people there the police did nothing so a riot wouldnt be started). its completely unrecognized as a religion, and is often met with skepticism. my parents accept me having this religion, though i believe my stepmom secretly wants me to be a christian.

i believe in Evolution, and the idea of extraterrestrials and lots of other stuff, and i dont think it conflicts with my religion. in truth, the ancient greeks themselves did not believe everything in the stories. they knew better than to think Zeus was standing on top of the clouds throwing down lightning. its the same for me. i see the stories as a kind of way to make the gods a bit more real to people. they are less of physical beings to me and more like forces behind what happens in the world. its kinda hard to explain my own views...
